Global Coffee Cult

Legend has it coffee was discovered in Ethiopia by a goat herder who saw his goats bouncing about after eating berries from a bush. Curious, he tried them himself. Soon local monks were drying the berries and transporting them to distant monasteries where they were reconstituted in water. This crude coffee drink helped them stay awake during prayers.

The beans were soon cultivated in Yemen, and traveled to Turkey where they were roasted over open fires. The Turks polished the drink, boiling the beans in water, and making a thick, sweetened brew that became known across Europe as caffé.

Caffé came to Europe by way of Venice. At first, the Church called it the devil's brew, but then, fortunately, a coffee-drinking Pope blessed it and declared it Christian. Coffee houses spread quickly across Europe, becoming centers for intellectual, creative and political exchange.
